With crowds continuing to descend on things like Pisa and Florence, few tourists have noticed that there are indeed equally amazing towns and villages scattered throughout the Italian countryside. In fact, one such village is 61 miles southeast of Pisa.
Lari is the walled summit of the city of Cassiana Ta Lari, called “Fradian,” or Hamlet. It is located at a high altitude in Tuscany, centered around the castle and boasts incredible panoramic views of the Italian countryside. Visitors to Lari, home to around 6,000 residents, can expect to explore the picturesque streets lined with historic, colorful buildings.
Lari is best known for its impressive and preserved medieval fortress, Castello dei Vicari. The 11th century buildings feature reinforced walls, towers and an inner courtyard. Guided tours and exhibitions are offered to learn everything about the village's history.
Lari, the local government of Comune, comes from at least the 9th century BC. This is a fact established by traces of Etorskan architecture. Other important landmarks to marvel are the Church of San Leonardo, the Palace of Davikari, and the walls of the ancient city, within which you can enjoy the background of the authentic Tuscan countryside.
In the heart of the medieval village, there are charming streets lined with artisan workshops, and when you're hungry, explore the village's culinary traditions at a local eatery and enjoy the authentic Tuscan taste.
Visitors can also participate in olive oil tastings to sample a variety of locally produced extra virgin olive oils, as well as traditional breads and other local specialties. You can also discover Tusacny's famous wine region on a wine tasting tour at a local winery near Lari, including Chianti, Sangiovese and Vernaccia glasses.
If you don't have enough local cuisine, soak in Tuscan cooking classes and culinary workshops, learn how to prepare traditional dishes such as homemade pasta, bruschetta and tiramisu under the guidance of a local chef, and use fresh, seasonal ingredients sourced from the local area.
Once the Lari is thoroughly explored, there are vineyards, olive fields and many more hilltop villages waiting to be discovered nearby.
Lari is a 30-40 minute drive from Pisa Airport. Hire a car and follow the Lari signs outside the Firenze-Pisa-Livorno Superstrada near Pontedera Ponsaco. For those relying on public transport, the CPT (Consorzio Autolinee) Route 400 is one of Lari's main bus routes. To extend your trip, you can stay at the incredible Il Castello di San Rafino Hotel, just 1.1 miles from the centre of the village. The historic building, swimming pool, sun terrace, bar and restaurant serves just £127 in double rooms in June for just £127.
