Mallorca's chaos as tourists warn them to prepare for a traffic jam summer | Travel News | Travel

Palma police and Guardia citizens have warned that traffic congestion is getting worse on the popular Holiday Islands of Mallorca. This is especially true for Palma, which is the access road to the capital (including Via De Cintura (MA-20) Ring Road).

This has resulted in an increase in accidents. Currently, veterans at Guardia Civil's Tráfico Division say there appears to be no signs of improvement in the near future. “On the contrary, there are more and more cars. This means greater crowding of the outdated road network. Without a quick and decisive response, this situation will only get worse.”

Officials predict that in the summer of 2025, we will see “Record Road comping,” given that tourism on the biggest Balearais Island is expected to be even busier than last year.

In 2024, Mallorca saw record numbers of tourists, with Palma de Malorca Airport serving more than 33 million passengers, up 7% from 2023.

The Mallorca Research Council shows that in 2023, 183,317 vehicles peaked in the Viachintula section by the son Hugo Sports Centre.

“That's really ridiculous. These roads can't withstand such heavy traffic loads,” the officer added, Magical Daily Britain reported. “It's clear that there's jam during the morning and evening rush hour. That was a year and a half ago. Since then, that number has increased by up to 6%.”

The current peak is estimated at 200,000.

As a result of the increase in crowds, the number of accidents has also increased. Most are rear impacts, usually resulting in mild damage, but contributes to even more crowds.

“Previously, when you saw the long lines and traffic jams, you knew that an accident had happened. Now, in many cases, nothing happened.”

The vast number of civilian vehicles has been highlighted as the main cause of concern. Unlike before, a family of four or five people can have up to three or four cars. According to the Balearic Statistics Institute, in 2023, 837,240 vehicles were registered in Mallorca. The number of cars was 584,042.

Relocation of residents is also a contribution. People are currently moving to municipalities such as Llucmajor, Marratxi and Santa Maria due to the affordable prices in the capital. After that, they have to travel to Parma by car. In addition to this, the number of cars brought to Mallorca by foreign property owners and car feed operators is increasing.

A Palma Police HQ official told the news site that the traffic conditions phone app shows the scale of the problem.
