Few people in the UK have never heard of millions of people heading there every year. However, there is a gem that is only known from just 15km from the popular holiday hotspot, and recently has been crowned Spain's top coastal destination for British holiday makers on a budget.

Which one? The trip, which conducted a survey of 1,000 people, is Altea's gentle whitewashed gem, Spain's best escape, wiping out categories such as charm, value for value, scenery and more. According to either of these, the Spanish city is “a historic village destination where the blue-stretched church dome on the hill of the sugar cube house shines.” Constructed with cobblestone streets and white stone houses, the city is a genuine Spanish droplet near other parts of the area that have lost its original Spanish charm.

Its main square features a variety of restaurants ranging from tapas to seafood, many with fantastic views of the town's beaches and the blue sea.

At the heart of the community, the tall church is tall, dominating the landscape with blue and white domes sparkling blue and white domes in bright sunlight.

The town has a bohemian vibe, and art lovers often have its diverse sculptures, canvas, creative art shops and galleries.

Absence is a more common sports bar and chain restaurant in Benidorm and other popular destinations, allowing Altea to maintain Spanish charm and traditional lifestyle.

With the decline in tourism levels in the area, locals in the town are friendly and welcoming, and people born from Spanish towns and cities are free from the disgusting nuisance of tourists and those responsible for their impact.

Which one? This explains Altea as follows: “A romantic environment – the mountain walls on one side and the Mediterranean on the other side began sightseeing along this coast in the late 50's.

“They are still here too. The atelier and gallery are scattered throughout the old town, scented by Bougainvillea, the cat witch on the cobblestone street under the church, tied to a small square.”

Not only is the town a great value when visiting, it's also perfect for those traveling on a budget, with flights starting at £50.

British people can get return flights to Alicante, the closest airport to Altoa from the UK surroundings, including Bristol, Birmingham, London Luton, Newquay, Norwich, Exeter, Leeds/Bradford.
