The Uganda Wildlife Service (UWA) launched the 2025 Bwindi Sarambuwe Mountain Gorilla and first chimpanzee census, officially launched by Dr. Dr., Executive Director of the Tropical Forest Conservation Institute in Bwindi Non-Invasive National Park on May 6th. A team of 70% trained personnel from UWA will conduct census in two phases using nest numbers and genetic analysis methods. The first sweep is set to end in June, with the second scheduled for September.

The purpose of the census is to establish current population figures for mountain gorillas and chimpanzees in the region, assess threats, and guide future conservation efforts. The launch attracted stakeholders such as the Rwanda Development Committee, J.Good All Institute, Gorilla Doctors and WWF Uganda. According to the UWA, more than 103 mountain gorilla births have been registered in Bwindi since 2019, indicating progress on long-term conservation goals.
