Brits dreaming of a sun-soaked holiday this summer can face unexpected confusion before reaching the departure gate thanks to lesser known airport security rules. Most people may be worried that security queues and strikes are missing flights, but smartphones can ruin your trip. Travel expert WildPack American Summer Camps warns that a dead phone could disconnect you and confiscate your boarding or device.

Travel expert Jamie Fraser explains: “Many travelers are unaware that airport security operates under stricter guidelines on electronic devices. If security personnel cannot switch phones to perform the necessary checks, they have the authority to consider the device or your security risks.”

Experts say that if the device doesn't work when asked, they can't get it on the plane. Airport staff may ask you to turn on your device and prove it works.

If the device is broken or not charged and you cannot turn it on when asked, you will not be allowed to take it during flight.

Travel advice on gov.uk includes: “Make sure your electronic device is charged before your trip. If the device is not on at the time of request, you will not be allowed to take it to the aircraft.”

Most passengers don't need to prove that the device works, but airport security may be checked randomly. This rule has been around for a while, but many travelers still don't know about it. ”

    Jamie Fraser adds:

“A device that is not functioning can cause doubt, leading to significant delays in boarding and potential denials.

“In some cases, security even confiscates devices for further inspection.”

To avoid the problem, you need to make sure your phone is charged before you leave for the airport.

It's also a good idea to pack a portable charger if you have a charger that is particularly useful if you're on longer journeys or are expecting delays.

You can also get a paper backup of your boarding pass just in case your phone dies.

Finally, make sure you know your rights – you should familiarize yourself with the airport's policies regarding your airline and electronics.

By following these simple tips, you can avoid panic at the airport at the last minute.
