About 500 flights were cancelled yesterday following power outages in Spain and Portugal. If you are affected by the blackout, you will be eligible for a free alternative travel option, but you will need to act promptly. EasyJet offers passengers affected by yesterday's blackout the option to rebook another flight within 72 hours at no additional cost, or receive a travel voucher for future use.
The airline has cancelled four flights to and from Bristol and round trips from Luton, the Independent reported. EasyJet wrote yesterday:
“For passengers who are in Spain or Portugal and are unable to travel to the airport today, we offer free relocation to an alternative EasyJet flight or flight voucher within 72 hours.”
Some airlines, like EasyJet, may offer vouchers in lieu of a refund.
“We are pleased to announce that we are pleased to announce that we are pleased to announce that we are pleased to announce that we are pleased to announce that we are offering a stake in the airline's compensation specialist SkyRefund.
“While such suspensions are considered extraordinary, the airline is not obligated to provide financial compensation — they still need to provide assistance, including meals and snacks with delays of more than two hours, overnight delays, accommodation and transportation, and communications facilities.
“If your flight is cancelled, you have the right to choose a full refund or alternative shipping to your final destination on the final occasion. If the cost is incurred due to confusion, we will retain all receipts to facilitate a refund request.”
However, airlines can avoid compensation if delays or cancellations are caused by “extraordinary circumstances,” such as power outages in Spain or Portugal.
Ryanair said: “Only a small number of claims eligible for coverage are covered by coverage, and most delays/cancellations are out of control of Ryanair.
“Airlines are exempt from their obligation to compensate in these circumstances.”
Please contact your airline as soon as possible to request a voucher or to reschedule your flight.
