Beautiful Spanish city, 40 minutes from Barcelona, 7m less touristy | Travel News | Travel

Spain is not accustomed to tourism, and few cities like Barcelona attract crowds. According to the city's hotel occupancy survey, world-renowned architecture, beaches and cultural landmarks attracted an astounding 7.3 million visitors in 2023.

But just 40 minutes by train, Girona is waiting to be explored, a historic and vibrant city that welcomed only 342,600 visitors in 2023. It welcomes over 7 million tourists and Girona is the perfect guest room for authenticity, beauty and breathing that craves travelana.

Girona may not boast the global fame of its larger neighbors, but it has its own quiet magic. Hidden between the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean, the city is known for its incredibly preserved medieval architecture, cobblestone alleys and iconic pastel-colored houses lined with the Onyar River.

If you stroll around Bali Vel (old town), you will find yourself stepping into picture books. Labyrinthine's Jewish quarter, or El Call, is one of Europe's most well-preserved, offering an unforgettable glimpse into the city's medieval past.

Climbing to the walls of the old town for panoramic views, strolling through ancient Rome via Augusta, visiting Girona Cathedral, and its wide stone staircases have become the background to your favorite Instagram (and the location of the game filming for fans of the show).

Despite its modest size and laidback atmosphere, Girona is far outweighed the weight when it comes to food.

The city is a pilgrimage site for foodies thanks to Elsella de Can Roca, who once ranked the best restaurants in the world.

However, you don't need to book at Michelin starred spots to enjoy the Girona cooking scene. From local bakeries offering fresh Xuixos (pastry filled with sugar-covered custard), to restaurants run by families who adorn Bochifara and Sketo de Paise, Girona is a place where the flavours are traditional and fearlessly creative.

The appeal of Girona is amplified by how easy it is to reach. The high-speed avenue train from Barcelona takes just 38 minutes and there is also an airport nearby that connects to other European cities. Once there, everything is easy to walk in, picturesque and welcome.

Whether you want to spend a quiet weekend in medieval streets or base yourself on your own in a peaceful place while exploring Catalonia, Girona offers a bit of something stress-free.
