The Foreign, Federal and Development Authority (FCDO) is poised to introduce new bills to Britons this week. Starting Wednesday, April 9, 2025, the government will implement new charges for emergency travel documents (ETDs) and emergency passports.
ETD allows international travel in emergency situations where it is not possible to use your UK passport if it is lost, for example. It is usually effective for either a single trip or a return trip.
The revised fee includes the cost of providing emergency travel documents, which were previously an additional fee. Emergency passports are issued in exceptional cases, primarily when ETDs are not available.
The existing fee for processing your emergency travel document application is £100. This will remain until April 8th, but by April 9th the price will rise to £125.
The current fee for handling the application for providing emergency passports is £75 if emergency travel documents cannot be provided. This will remain the same until April 8th, but will increase to 125 pounds from April 9th, Liverpool Echo reports.
Emergency travel documents allow you to travel internationally if you need it urgently and not use your UK passport. It is usually effective on a single trip or return trip.
This document allows you to pass through up to five countries. You can apply for emergency travel documents if all of the following apply:
You are a British citizen. You must travel within 6 weeks. Your UK passport has been lost, stolen, damaged, filled, recently expired, or is located in the HM passport office.
If your UK passport was issued before January 1, 2006, you will normally need to apply for a UK passport rather than an emergency travel document. You may be able to obtain emergency travel documents if all of the following apply:
Those who have or are eligible to travel within six weeks must be travelled.
Exceptional circumstances may include:
Your child was born unexpectedly. You need emergency care that is not accessible without travel to other countries You want to attend a relative funeral
If you have not received your UK passport issued after January 1, 2006. In that case, you will not be able to obtain emergency travel documents for holidays, weddings, family gatherings, or employment interviews.
Supportive evidence must be provided to clarify the urgency of travel and demonstrate its need. Each application is evaluated individually.
Before submitting your application, check whether the country you plan to leave, enter and pass accepts emergency travel documents. This includes checking whether a visa is required.
You can only apply online if your passport is issued after January 1, 2006. The application fee is currently £100, but will rise to £125 on April 9th. No refunds are available.
