Air France-KLM is proud to announce that the resend of the two Lion Cubs, Yoda and YSIS, has been successful in South Africa. The victims of animal rights abuse in Europe were rescued in 2020 by the Damis Foundation of 303 million (Foundation of Friends of Friends) and rescued by the Tonga Tereda Sures Association at the Zoo Park in Saint Martin Raplane.
Returning to Yoda and YSIS's home began with a flight from Lyon to Paris, followed by the Air France Flight AF 990 from Paris to Johannesburg. Fully funded by the 303 million Damis Foundation, Lions arrived in South Africa on March 4, 2025 and is settling in their new home.
After spending the last five years of care, Yoda and YSIS will begin a new chapter in the SanWild Sanctuary Wildlife Trust. Located just a few kilometres south of Leydsdorp in Limpopo and near the western boundary of Kruger National Park, SanWild is a 5,000 hectares of wildlife rehabilitation centre and reserve. As part of the Roar project led by Alexandre Blanchon, under the care of the SanWild team, the Lions initially lived in Semi-Freedom, allowing them to gradually re-adapt to their natural environment.
Since then, genetic testing has confirmed that they are brothers. This is a clear bond after being rescued.
Wilson Tauro, South Africa, Country Manager of Air France KLM, expressed pride in the airline's commitment to animal welfare. “Air France is dedicated to ensuring that tormented wildlife is given the opportunity to return home. Repatriation of Yoda and YSIS is a proud one for us and strengthens South Africa's reputation as a major destination for wildlife rehabilitation,” he says. “We are committed to transporting living animals safely and efficiently. We believe our efforts will help these lions begin a new life in the Sanfalid Reserve.”
Air France-KLM's commitment to ethical and responsible transport is evident in its support for wildlife conservation and animal welfare initiatives. The successful retransmission of Yoda and YSIS not only marks important milestones in their journey, but also highlights the collaboration of organizations such as the 303 million Damis Foundation, Tonga Terrell Ashueire, the roAR Project and Air France KLM in the fight against human transport of wildlife.
