There is no doubt about that. Mike White is a genius. The first season of HBO's The White Lotus surprised us. The second was what we wanted more. And the third burned the internet. Because every week, I stuff my plate with more drama, speculation, and horrifying monkeys than I can shake the stick.
It also took the concept of “armchair” travel to a whole new level. Seasons 1 and 2 took us to Hawaii and Sicily, while Season 3 was able to combine the biggest travel trends of 2025 (luxury, wellness, “gallcation”) on an exhilarating trip to Thailand.
In fact, Minor Hotels reports that Episode 1 of Season 3 sparked unprecedented interest in Anantara facilities in Thailand, jumping over 104% of the website traffic.
In South Africa, flight centres also feel the “white lotus effect.”
“We're definitely seeing an increase in inquiries in Thailand,” says Antoinette Turner, general manager of flight centres in South Africa. “People are particularly interested in quotes and packaging that incorporates Koh Samui, Phuket and Bangkok, where White Lotus was mostly filmed.”
Part of the charm is the beautiful backdrops of the series, including lush rainforests, pristine beaches and private villas. The entire “White Lotus” experience is dripped with luxuries, massage oils and salt scrubs. But don't you want to meditate in a private treatment suite, relax in a “sensory deprivation” tank before hitting the beach, or put a tuk tuk (or koh samui, sonthaew) in town to celebrate the song clan?
Check all boxes for family holidays, romantic escapes, girls' trips, or solo adventures. As Turner explains, you don't need a white lotus size budget to enjoy Thailand.
“Our latest blog will take a closer look at the various options available to travelers in Thailand and South Africa,” she says. “The biggest draw beyond the beach is that Thailand continues to be visa-free for South Africans.
For Turner, the next resort is a great option for travelers looking for a priceless “White Lotus” inspired break.
First, the 4.5-star Chawen Regent Beach Resort, located directly on Chawen Beach, is known for its soft sand and turquoise waters. It is also a step from Koh Samui's market and restaurants, perfect for those who want to balance their lazy days in the (magnificent) pool with a bit of excitement and nightlife balance.
Secondly, hidden on the quiet edge of Chaweng Beach, Amari Koh Samui offers three different wings (Garden Wings, Thai Village Wings, Beach Wings) for those looking for unique experiences, including romantic charms, even if the family is full.
Therenthere's Melati Beach Resort & Spa. It is most reminiscent of White Lotus, offering privacy, exclusivity and luxury.
For Turner, finding quiet spots is an important part of the decision-making process.
“We don't want the situation in Maya Bay, where the beach was closed to deal with environmental damage caused by overtourism,” Turner says. “The important message is: Always support and always support local businesses and local organizations who enjoy Thailand but are exploring lesser-known destinations and working to protect Thailand's natural resources.”
Luckily, there are many “mindful” and responsible ways to enjoy Thailand, including walking at the local spa, waterfalls, sunset cruises, and spoiled treatments.
If you are planning a trip to Koh Samui in 2025, consider including the following sites and activities in your itinerary:
Scenic hiking trails to Hinlad Waterfall. Much more quiet than Na Muang Waterfalls, this calm hike offers a calm temple complex at the beginning of the trail, plenty of bird and water monitors, and a refreshing dip option at the foot of the calm waterfall. Eco-friendly excursions at Thailand's sheltered Anthon National Marine Park – an archipelago of 42 islands in the breathtaking view of snorkel, kayak or hiking. A visit to Island Organic Samui for an unparalleled agricultural tourism experience. Enjoy authentic Thai cooking classes and farm tours. Or head to Gallia Tonsai Bay for an organic garden tour.
“There's a lot to see and see,” Turner says. “Obviously, we would like to visit the beautiful temples of Samui and spend plenty of time in the beaches and water. So, plan at koh samui on both sides of Bangkok for at least five days.
“Thai people are incredibly kind. Thai holidays, whether you're looking for a complete 'White Lotus' holiday or looking for a calm, calm truck experience with your girlfriend, kids or partner, you'll never be disappointed! ”
