If you are considering spraying it into Athens or Budapest this year, we recommend considering this alternative.
With spring in full swing, many of us start thinking about possible destinations for the upcoming summer holidays. With its fantastic beaches, historic cities and delicious food, Greece is always a popular choice.
Those who enjoy a city break may be drawn to Athens. This vast city is ingrained in culture and could be relatively affordable for people traveling on a budget.
Alternatively, those looking for an action-packed break may choose to go to Budapest, Hungary. With its gorgeous old town and thermal baths, this is a great place for a long weekend.
However, if you are trying to keep costs down this year, another capital from a nearby country might be a better option. Sofia in Bulgaria welcomed around 127 million tourists last year, and according to one travel enthusiast, that's a good reason.
Tara, a self-proclaimed “adventure traveler” known as @WheretArawent on Tiktok, claimed that she had “lol” money during her time at Sofia. “I don't think of myself as a budget traveler,” she said.
“But I spend very little money on this underrated European city. She explained that many tours can be booked, including graffiti tours and historic walking tours. There are also food tours for those who don't get enough local food.
All tours recommended by Tara are free. This means you can save money for other activities. Tara continued.
“But I think both cities boast Byzantine churches and are close to the mountains, so I think they could rival Athens in Greece.
“Even if you're not looking for another destination, Sofia should be on the European travel radar.”
Flights to Sofia cost just £25 from the UK airport, depending on when you fly. According to Wizz Air, the most popular visit time is August, but February is considered the city's low season due to the cold winter months.
The average peak season is 29c. In other words, you can absorb the sight and soak in the bright sunlight. Accommodations usually range from around £27 to £122 per night.
