A few weeks before the start of the summer holiday season, it was announced that the cost of UK passports would rise by 7%. The Home Office has announced that following a similar hike last year, the minister has approved a 7% increase in the price of mandatory travel documents, and that the costs of UK passports will rise again. The standard online application fees made within the UK will increase from £88.50 to £94.50 for adults, and from £57.50 to £61.50 for children.
new Passport application fee is valid April 10, 2025. The government's announcement states: “The new fees will help the Home Office continue to move to a system that meets its costs through those who use it, reducing reliance on funds from general taxation.”
“The government does not make any profit from the cost of the passport application. The fees contribute to the cost of processing the passport application, lost or stolen passports, and processing costs for British citizens at the UK border.”
The government has announced that postal applications will also see an increase, with adults increasing from 100 pounds to 107 pounds and children increasing from 69 pounds to 74 pounds.
Additionally, the fees for premium service applications made in the UK will increase from £207.50 to £222 for adults and from £176.50 to £189 for children.
For those applying from overseas, the standard online application fee increases from £101 to £108 for adults and from £65.50 to £70 for children.
Standard paper applications overseas increase between £112.50 and £120.50 for adults and between £77 and £82.50 for children.
This marks the third price rise in just two years, following similar hikes in 2023 and 2024.
After a 9% increase in February 2023 and an additional 7% increase in April 2024, passport prices have risen 25% over the past two years.
