If you are planning a summer vacation but don't want to get caught up in surprise taxes, it's wise to look into which countries have brought tourism taxes and which countries are hiking existing taxes. Tourism taxes are brought as a way to combat overtourism, reinvesting into the country's infrastructure to support visitors as well as native populations.
Travel insurance comparison experts at Quotezone.co.uk revealed eight countries that are introducing or hiking existing tourism taxes. Travel insurance expert Helen Rolf said: “The concept of tourism tax is not new, but it's something that many more countries have introduced over the past few years. It appears that many of these countries are charging tourists in response to overtourism concerns.”
Below is a list of new locations for tourist tax in 2025
1.SCOTLAND -5% Accommodation fee plus tax
Edinburgh has announced that Scotland's first tourism tax will be introduced starting July 2026. Travel booked after October 1, 2025 will be affected by what is called a visitor's Levi. This rate applies to people staying overnight in the city and expands to all visitors, including Scottish residents.
2. Greece – 8.00 euros per night
Greece has revealed a significant increase in daily prices for tourists to strengthen infrastructure and promote sustainable tourism. Previously the charge for Greek tourists was 0.50 euros. Currently, tourists pay 8.00 euros per night between April and October, or 2.00 euros per night outside of this peak season. This sudden increase is reportedly helpful in funding climate change adaptation, disaster prevention and infrastructure improvements.
3. Santorini and Mykonos – 20.00 euros per night
To combat Torrism, Greece is now placing an even higher visitor tax on its most popular islands, Santorini and Mykonos. This incredible tax is maintained per night and must be paid immediately at the port.
4. Venice – 5.00 euros per day
In 2024, tourists visiting Venice during their daytime peaks faced costs as part of a court scheme. This scheme is currently occurring entirely in 2025. The Venice entrance tax is scheduled to visit the city between 8:30am and 16:00pm on certain dates in April, May, June and July.

Last year, visiting a popular urban break destination in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, became even more expensive as it increased its tourist tax to 12.5% of the one-night hotel tax rate.
